an exploration of hygge culture

Inspired by the Danish practice of Hygge, I set out to design a light that carried the aesthetic of a candle into the 21st century. What eventuated was an exploration of form, to deliver the same even and warm light given by a candle, while redesigning the form for the modern home.

After experimenting with the light transmission properties of a range of forms and materials, I decided upon a vacuum formed styrene base, and 3D printed ABS top. Together, these materials beautifully reflect and distribute the light, while highlighting the material process. Juxtaposing the smooth contours of the vacuum formed piece, the 3D printed sphere presents a series of internal chanels and cavities, much like our moon.
